Flowers Vineyard & Winery History

Flowers Vineyard & Winery is a renowned winery located on the rugged Sonoma Coast of California. With a rich history spanning several decades, the winery has become synonymous with producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir and microclimates of the region.

The story of Flowers Vineyard & Winery begins in the late 1980s when Joan and Walt Flowers, a couple with a shared passion for wine, embarked on a journey to find the perfect location to grow ultra-premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. They were determined to craft wines that expressed the cool climate and distinctive character of the Sonoma Coast, and after an extensive search, they discovered an idyllic site perched high above the Pacific Ocean in the remote Fort Ross-Seaview AVA.

In 1989, the Flowers purchased 250 acres of land, which became the heart of their vineyard. It was a challenging endeavor, as the site was incredibly rugged, with steep slopes, rocky soils, and maritime influences, making it an extreme environment for grape cultivation. Undeterred by these obstacles, the Flowers persevered, recognizing the potential to create wines that captured the essence of this unique coastal terroir.

They carefully planted their first vineyards, selecting specific clones that thrived in cool climate conditions. Joan and Walt also sought the guidance of legendary winemaker, Andre Tchelistcheff, who provided invaluable insight and expertise. With his guidance, they honed their winemaking techniques and embraced a philosophy rooted in minimal intervention, allowing nature to guide the winemaking process.

The inaugural vintage of Flowers Vineyard & Winery was released in 1991, receiving critical acclaim and establishing the winery as a promising newcomer in the California wine industry. Their wines quickly gained recognition for their elegance, complexity, and ability to express the distinct nuances of the Sonoma Coast.

Over the years, Flowers Vineyard & Winery expanded its vineyard holdings, carefully selecting additional sites within the Sonoma Coast and Sonoma Valley appellations, each uniquely suited for growing premium grapes. They continued to be pioneers of sustainable and organic farming practices, embracing biodynamic principles to nurture the health and biodiversity of their vineyards.

In 2000, Joan and Walt passed the winery's leadership to their son, Jason Flowers, who took on the role of President. Under his stewardship, the winery evolved, investing in state-of-the-art facilities and technology while maintaining a steadfast commitment to producing exceptional wines that remain true to their origins.

Today, Flowers Vineyard & Winery is regarded as one of the foremost producers of cool-climate wines in California. Their portfolio includes a range of meticulously crafted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines that showcase the distinctive characteristics of the Sonoma Coast. Emphasizing elegance, balance, and purity of flavors, their wines continue to capture the imagination of wine enthusiasts and critics alike.

With a history rooted in an unwavering commitment to quality and a profound respect for the land, Flowers Vineyard & Winery stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of the Flowers family. Their wines not only exemplify the beauty of the Sonoma Coast but also serve as a fitting tribute to the unique terroir that gives birth to these exceptional vintages.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
