Emerald Creek Winery History

Emerald Creek Winery, nestled in the heart of California's picturesque wine country, has a rich and fascinating history that dates back several decades.

The story begins in the early 1970s when John and Martha Johnson, a passionate couple with a love for viticulture, purchased a vast parcel of land in the rolling hills of Northern California. Recognizing the region's incredible potential for grape cultivation, they set out to establish their own winery and create top-quality wines.

After years of careful planning, the Johnsons planted the first vines on their property in 1975. Inspired by the natural beauty surrounding them, they decided to name their winery Emerald Creek, paying homage to the vibrant and pristine creek that meandered through their land. It was a symbol of the purity and serenity they sought to reflect in their wines.

The early years of Emerald Creek Winery were characterized by passion, hard work, and a commitment to excellence. John and Martha devoted countless hours to nurturing their vineyards, experimenting with different grape varieties, and perfecting their winemaking techniques.

Their efforts soon bore fruit as Emerald Creek Winery gained recognition and accolades within the wine community. In the 1980s, their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines started to make waves, winning prestigious awards at national and international competitions. This success propelled the winery into the spotlight and solidified its reputation as a producer of top-tier wines.

However, Emerald Creek Winery faced its fair share of challenges over the years. The 1990s brought with it a wave of phylloxera, a devastating vineyard pest, which forced the Johnsons to replant many of their vineyards. Undeterred, they viewed this setback as an opportunity for growth and a chance to upgrade their grape selection. They replanted their vineyards with newer and more disease-resistant clones, ensuring the longevity and continued success of Emerald Creek Winery.

In the early 2000s, John and Martha decided to pass the baton to the next generation. Their daughter, Sarah Johnson, took over as the winemaker, bringing her own unique perspective and innovative ideas to the family business. Under Sarah's leadership, the winery embraced sustainable farming practices and introduced new grape varietals, expanding their portfolio to include more exotic and lesser-known wines.

Today, Emerald Creek Winery stands as a testament to the Johnson family's enduring dedication to crafting exceptional wines. Their commitment to producing wines of the highest quality, while maintaining a deep respect for the land, has earned them a loyal following of wine enthusiasts around the world. The winery's portfolio now encompasses a diverse range of varietals, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Syrah, each telling its own story of the unique terroir in which it was grown.

Visitors to Emerald Creek Winery are greeted with warm hospitality and the opportunity to experience the beauty of the vineyards up close. The winery offers tours and tastings, providing guests with a chance to sample their award-winning wines while soaking in the breathtaking scenery.

As the legacy of Emerald Creek Winery continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: a relentless pursuit of excellence and a deep appreciation for the art of winemaking. The Johnson family's unwavering commitment to quality and innovation ensures that Emerald Creek Winery will continue to flourish for generations to come, leaving an indelible mark on California's winemaking heritage.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
