Ehret Family Winery History

Ehret Family Winery, located in the renowned wine-producing region of Knights Valley, California, holds a rich history that dates back several generations. The winery's story begins with the Ehret family's arrival in California during the late 1800s.

In 1886, Bernard Ehret, a German immigrant, settled in Sonoma County, bringing with him expertise in viticulture and winemaking. He established a small vineyard and focused on cultivating classic European grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Bernard's dedication and passion for winemaking laid the foundation for future generations to follow.

As years passed, the family's vineyard flourished under the hands of Bernard's son, Emil Ehret. Emil expanded the vineyard and transitioned from bulk wine production to crafting small-batch, high-quality wines. His commitment to excellence and innovative winemaking techniques garnered recognition and praise from critics and wine enthusiasts alike.

Emil's son, Rolland Ehret, carried the family legacy forward, taking over the winemaking operations in the mid-20th century. Rolland's ambition to further elevate the winery's offerings prompted him to plant new vineyards in the nearby hillside of Knights Valley. This terroir, with its volcanic soils, cool climate, and favorable elevation, proved ideal for producing rich, expressive wines.

In the late 1990s, Rolland's son, Fred Ehret, assumed the reins of the family business. Recognizing the untapped potential of Knights Valley, Fred dedicated himself to the pursuit of crafting world-class wines. He implemented sustainable farming practices, optimizing vineyard health and promoting ecological balance.

Under Fred's leadership, Ehret Family Winery underwent significant expansion and modernization. He renovated the winery facilities, incorporating cutting-edge technology to enhance winemaking precision while maintaining the deep-rooted traditions that had been passed down through generations. Fred also fostered collaborations with renowned winemakers and experts, further enriching the winery's depth of knowledge and expertise.

Today, Ehret Family Winery stands as a testament to the hard work, ingenuity, and unwavering commitment of the Ehret family across several generations. The estate's vineyards span over 42 acres, reflecting the diverse microclimates and soil types found in Knights Valley. This diversity allows Ehret Family Winery to produce a wide array of premium wines, consistently earning accolades and praise within the wine industry.

With a steadfast dedication to quality, sustainability, and meticulous craftsmanship, Ehret Family Winery continues to captivate wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs worldwide. The winery's legacy perseveres, blending the old and the new, as each bottle crafted embodies the vision and passion of the Ehret family – a journey that began over a century ago, rooted in the pursuit of producing exceptional wines that reflect the rich terroir and spirit of California's winemaking heritage.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
