Donatoni Winery, nestled in the picturesque region of California's wine country, has a rich and fascinating history that spans several decades. Established in 1965 by the Donatoni family, this winery has become synonymous with exceptional quality wines and a commitment to preserving traditional winemaking techniques.

The story of Donatoni Winery begins with its founder, Antonio Donatoni, an Italian immigrant who brought with him a deep-rooted passion for winemaking. Antonio's journey to California started in the late 1950s when he left his homeland in search of a better life and an opportunity to share his winemaking expertise.

Upon arriving in California, Antonio was captivated by the lush vineyards and the burgeoning wine industry. He soon realized the potential of the region's terroir and the opportunity to craft wines that rivaled those of his homeland. Determined to pursue his dream, Antonio purchased a small vineyard in the heart of Sonoma County, where Donatoni Winery stands today.

With a meticulous focus on selecting the finest grape varietals and nurturing the vineyards to their fullest potential, Antonio began producing remarkable wines that quickly gained recognition for their exceptional quality. The winery's commitment to sustainable agriculture and organic farming practices earned them a loyal following among wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.

Antonio's sons, Matteo and Giovanni, joined the family business in the 1980s, bringing with them a fresh perspective and innovative techniques. Together, they expanded the winery's operations, acquiring additional vineyards in neighboring Napa Valley and Mendocino County. This expansion allowed Donatoni Winery to experiment with different grape varieties and terroirs, further enhancing the diversity and depth of their wine portfolio.

Throughout its history, Donatoni Winery has consistently embraced its Italian heritage, infusing each bottle with a touch of Old-World charm. Traditional winemaking methods, such as hand-harvesting and gentle grape pressing, continue to be diligently practiced to ensure that every wine reflects the unique character of the land from which it originates.

Apart from its exceptional wines, Donatoni Winery has also become renowned for its commitment to sustainable practices. Embracing renewable energy sources, implementing water conservation techniques, and actively participating in conservation programs, the winery strives to minimize its environmental impact and preserve the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Today, Donatoni Winery remains a family-owned and operated establishment, with Matteo and Giovanni at the helm, carrying on their father's legacy of producing extraordinary wines. Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
