Domaine Carneros
History
Domaine Carneros is an esteemed winery situated in the heart of California's Carneros region, renowned for its exceptional sparkling wines and Pinot Noir. With a history deeply rooted in tradition, excellence, and a pioneering spirit, Domaine Carneros has become a landmark and a symbol for exceptional winemaking in California.
The winery was established in 1987 through a unique collaboration between Champagne Taittinger, the renowned French Champagne house, and Kobrand Corporation, a revered international wine importer. Claude Taittinger, then-president of Champagne Taittinger, became captivated by the potential of Carneros as an ideal location for producing sparkling wines comparable in quality to those of Champagne, France. The rolling hills, cool climate, and maritime influences of Carneros offered the perfect conditions for cultivating Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes.
To make this vision a reality, Champagne Taittinger acquired a 138-acre parcel of land, previously a cattle ranch, in the southern Napa Valley. The decision to establish the winery in California was, and still is, a testament to the exceptional terroir that resembles the unique qualities found in Champagne.
Domaine Carneros broke ground in 1986, and the winery was designed to be a true reflection of the Taittinger style and spirit. The architectural design draws inspiration from the Château de la Marquetterie in Champagne, France, which has been a place of significance for the Taittinger family for generations. The château-style building features a stunning terrace with breathtaking views over the surrounding vineyards, evoking a sense of elegance and refinement.
From the beginning, Domaine Carneros aimed to produce sparkling wines using the traditional, labor-intensive méthode traditionnelle. This method involves fermenting the base wine in individual bottles, promoting the development of delicate bubbles through a secondary fermentation process. The winery's first release, the Domaine Carneros Brut, occurred in 1988, establishing a benchmark for exceptional sparkling wines in California.
Under the expert guidance of Eileen Crane, who became the founding winemaker and CEO of Domaine Carneros, the winery has consistently earned critical acclaim for its wines. Crane's dedication to sustainable farming practices and her meticulous approach to winemaking have elevated Domaine Carneros to great heights. Her mastery of blending different vineyard sources, clonal diversity, and barrel aging techniques has resulted in sparkling wines that display finesse, complexity, and aging potential.
Today, Domaine Carneros produces a range of sparkling wines, including Brut, Blanc de Blancs, Brut Rosé, and Ultra Brut, which showcase the distinct terroir, fruit purity, and elegance of Carneros. Additionally, the winery crafts limited-production still Pinot Noir wines, reflecting the world-class standards set by their sparkling counterparts.
Throughout its history, Domaine Carneros has remained committed to sustainable farming and ecological responsibility. The winery has achieved certification through the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance and implemented numerous measures to minimize its environmental impact. From vineyard management to winery operations, Domaine Carneros continually seeks to harmonize its practices with nature.
As one of the most iconic wineries in California, Domaine Carneros welcomes visitors from around the world to experience its exceptional wines and breathtaking surroundings. Guests can enjoy guided tours and tastings, explore the vineyards, and indulge in the unmatched beauty of Carneros.
In conclusion, Domaine Carneros represents the epitome of excellence in California winemaking. Its rich history, inspired by the traditions of Champagne, coupled with a commitment to sustainability and exceptional craftsmanship, has elevated the winery to its position as one of the finest producers of sparkling wines and Pinot Noir in the region.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
