Domaine Becquet Winery
History
Domaine Becquet Winery, located in the heart of California's wine country, has a rich and fascinating history that dates back several generations. The winery was established in 1975 by Pierre and Marie Becquet, who immigrated to California from France with a dream of producing exceptional wines reminiscent of their homeland.
Pierre and Marie settled in the renowned Napa Valley, attracted by its ideal climate and fertile soil that offered great potential for growing high-quality grapes. With a deep-rooted passion for winemaking and a solid understanding of traditional French viticulture techniques, the couple set out to create a winery that would showcase their expertise and dedication to producing world-class wines.
Driven by their shared vision, Pierre and Marie tirelessly worked to transform their small plot of land into a flourishing vineyard. They carefully selected the best grape varietals, focusing mainly on classic French varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Embracing sustainable farming practices, they nurtured their vineyards with utmost care, ensuring the grapes obtained optimal ripeness and flavor.
In the early years, the Becquet family faced many challenges and setbacks common to new wineries. However, their unwavering commitment to quality and their constant pursuit of perfection quickly gained recognition within the local community. Their wines started gaining significant acclaim at regional competitions and garnered attention from industry experts.
Over time, Domaine Becquet Winery expanded its operations, acquiring additional vineyards in neighboring regions. This allowed the winery to diversify its grape sourcing and produce a broader range of wines, showcasing the diversity and complexity of California's wine regions. Both red and white wines flourished under the careful craftsmanship of the Becquet family, each displaying a distinct character and sense of place.
In the late 1990s, Pierre and Marie passed the torch to their son, Jean-Paul Becquet. Having grown up among the vineyards and having learned the art of winemaking from his parents, Jean-Paul was well-prepared to continue the family legacy. He brought a fresh perspective to the winery while maintaining the traditions and values instilled in him throughout his upbringing.
Under Jean-Paul's guidance, Domaine Becquet Winery underwent a modernization phase, updating its equipment and cellar facilities to further enhance the quality of its wines. The winery began adopting new production techniques and exploring innovative winemaking approaches while remaining true to the essence of their French heritage.
Today, Domaine Becquet Winery stands as a well-established and respected producer in the California wine industry. Their wines are celebrated for their elegance, balance, and expression of terroir. The family's commitment to sustainable farming practices and their deep respect for the land ensures that future generations will continue to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
Visitors to Domaine Becquet Winery can experience the family's passion firsthand, touring the vineyards, cellar, and tasting room. The winery's warm and welcoming atmosphere provides an opportunity to learn about their winemaking techniques, sample their exquisite wines, and appreciate the dedication that goes into every bottle.
In conclusion, Domaine Becquet Winery's history is an inspiring tale of perseverance, dedication, and a profound love for winemaking. From humble beginnings, the Becquet family has transformed their dream into a reality, creating wines that pay homage both to their French heritage and the unique terroir of California.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
