Delicato Vineyards
History
Delicato Vineyards, one of California's renowned wineries, has a fascinating history dating back over 95 years. It all began when Gaspare Indelicato, a Sicilian immigrant, ventured to California in the 1920s in search of a better life. With a deep-rooted passion for winemaking, Gaspare purchased a vineyard in Manteca, San Joaquin County, and with the help of his family, laid the foundation for what would become one of California's most successful wineries.
Gaspare's son, Gaspar Joseph Indelicato, joined the family business in the 1950s and played a vital role in expanding and modernizing the vineyards. With his keen business acumen and a vision for growth, Gaspar transformed Delicato Vineyards into a thriving enterprise. Under his leadership, the winery expanded its acreage, diversified its grape varietals, and adopted advanced winemaking techniques, solidifying its reputation for producing high-quality wines.
In the 1980s, Delicato Vineyards took another significant leap forward when Gaspar's sons, Chris and Jay Indelicato, joined the family business. They brought fresh ideas and a forward-thinking approach to the company. Recognizing the potential for growth beyond California, they expanded Delicato's footprint by sourcing grapes from various regions across the state, allowing them to produce a diverse range of wines that showcased the unique characteristics of different terroirs.
The 1990s witnessed a pivotal moment for Delicato Vineyards when the family decided to launch its own brand. Previously, they had been primarily producing wines for other labels. With the introduction of the Delicato Family Vineyards brand, the winery gained recognition for its exceptional wines that offered great value. This move contributed to the winery's expanding popularity among wine enthusiasts across the United States.
In the early 2000s, Delicato Vineyards exhibited its commitment to sustainable practices by implementing state-of-the-art energy conservation techniques and earning certifications for environmentally friendly winemaking. The winery also focused on reducing water usage, improving water quality, and promoting wildlife preservation. These sustainability initiatives were a testament to the Indelicato family's commitment to protecting the land and ensuring a legacy of responsible winemaking for future generations.
With each passing decade, Delicato Vineyards continued to grow, gaining recognition for its wines and receiving numerous accolades from the wine industry. The winery's commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability has resonated with consumers, making Delicato wines a staple on store shelves and in the glasses of wine enthusiasts around the world.
Today, Delicato Vineyards remains a family-owned and operated winery, with the fourth generation actively involved in the business. Their commitment to their Italian heritage, combined with the pioneering spirit of their ancestors, has allowed Delicato Vineyards to thrive while staying true to their core values. The winery's focus on crafting wines that capture the true essence of California and deliver exceptional value continues to guide their approach, ensuring that Delicato Vineyards remains a prominent name in the world of California winemaking for many years to come.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
