What Makes Dashe Cellars
Different From Other Nearby Wineries?
Dashe Cellars is a standout winery in California for several compelling reasons. Firstly, they have an unwavering commitment to producing high-quality wines that truly embody the unique characteristics of the regions where their grapes are grown. This dedication to authenticity is evident in every sip and sets them apart from other wineries in the region.
One key aspect that distinguishes Dashe Cellars is their focus on single-vineyard wines. Rather than blending grapes from different vineyards, they opt to highlight the individuality and nuances of each vineyard site. This meticulous approach allows the winemakers to showcase the true expression of the grapes and the terroir, resulting in wines that are truly exceptional and reflective of their origin.
Another standout feature of Dashe Cellars is their use of traditional winemaking techniques such as open-top fermentation and basket pressing. These time-honored methods require more manual labor and attention to detail compared to modern production techniques, but they deliver wines with enhanced complexity and depth. By embracing these traditional practices, Dashe Cellars sets themselves apart as custodians of winemaking traditions, honoring the heritage of the craft.
Furthermore, Dashe Cellars is renowned for its commitment to sustainable and organic farming practices. They firmly believe that healthy vineyards produce the best grapes, and they strive to minimize the use of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers in their vineyards. This dedication to sustainability not only benefits the environment but also results in grapes that are imbued with a true sense of place.
In addition to their excellent wines, Dashe Cellars offers a unique and immersive tasting experience. Situated in the heart of the historic urban winery district of Oakland, their tasting room provides the perfect setting to sample their portfolio of wines. Visitors have the opportunity to not only taste their exceptional wines but also to gain insight into the winemaking process and the story behind each bottle.
Overall, Dashe Cellars stands out among other wineries in the region due to their unwavering commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality, their focus on single-vineyard expressions, the use of traditional winemaking techniques, their dedication to sustainable farming practices, and their immersive tasting experience. It's these qualities that make Dashe Cellars a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts looking for a truly unique and exceptional California winery experience.

Dashe Cellars
History
Dashe Cellars is a renowned winery located in the heart of California's wine country, specifically in Oakland, California. Founded in 1996 by Michael and Anne Dashe, this winery has quickly become an influential figure in the California wine industry, producing exceptional and distinctive wines that capture the essence of their vineyard sources.
The story of Dashe Cellars begins with the meeting of Michael and Anne Dashe in the early 1990s while they both worked at notable wineries in California. Michael, a talented winemaker, had gained experience at prestigious wineries in France and California, refining his craft and passion for winemaking. Anne, on the other hand, brought her expertise in fermentation and sensory analysis, which proved to be a perfect complement to Michael's winemaking skills.
United by their shared love for winemaking, Michael and Anne set out on their own winemaking venture, establishing Dashe Cellars in 1996. Oakland, a city not traditionally associated with winemaking, was chosen as the location due to its proximity to vineyards in Sonoma and Mendocino counties. The urban setting of the winery added an exciting and unique aspect to their operation, showing that great wines could be produced outside of the traditional wine regions.
From the very beginning, Dashe Cellars distinguished itself by focusing on the concept of "place." Michael and Anne wanted to showcase the unique characteristics and terroir expressed by the vineyards they sourced their grapes from. They sought out old, low-yielding vineyards that were often overlooked by other winemakers. By using traditional winemaking techniques combined with innovative approaches, they were able to bring out the full potential of these often underappreciated vineyards.
One of the pivotal moments for Dashe Cellars came in 2003 when they discovered the Les Enfants Terribles vineyard in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma County. This vineyard, planted with old-vine zinfandel dating back to the 1890s, became the cornerstone of the winery's production. The unique characteristics and outstanding quality of the grapes from this vineyard helped Dashe Cellars gain recognition and establish a loyal following of wine enthusiasts.
Over the years, Dashe Cellars continued to expand its portfolio, incorporating other varietals such as Carignane, Petite Sirah, Grenache, and more. By working with vineyards that focused on sustainable farming practices, Michael and Anne ensured that each wine produced by Dashe Cellars was not only a reflection of the vineyard but also an expression of their commitment to environmental stewardship.
In addition to their commitment to crafting exceptional wines, Dashe Cellars has also been at the forefront of sustainable winemaking practices. They were among the first wineries to join the Green Business Certification Program in California and have implemented various eco-friendly initiatives throughout their production process. From using natural yeasts for fermentation to employing gravity-flow techniques, every step is taken to minimize their impact on the environment.
Today, Dashe Cellars continues to thrive under the guidance of Michael and Anne Dashe. Their passion for winemaking, commitment to showcasing the unique terroir of each vineyard, and dedication to sustainable practices are evident in every bottle produced. As a result, Dashe Cellars has become revered for its exceptional wines and has garnered numerous accolades and awards, solidifying its position as one of California's premier wineries.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
