DAOU Family Estates
History
DAOU Family Estates is a renowned winery situated in the breathtaking Adelaida District of Paso Robles, California. This esteemed vineyard was founded by Lebanese brothers, Georges and Daniel Daou, who always had a deep passion for both winemaking and the beauty of the Central Coast.
The Daou brothers were born in Beirut, Lebanon, and their journey in the wine industry began long before they settled in California. They were exposed to the art of winemaking from a young age, as their family owned a small vineyard in Lebanon. This early exposure sparked their fascination with wine, fueling their desire to one day create their own world-class winery.
In 1983, Georges and Daniel immigrated to the United States and embarked on separate paths. However, their common love for wine eventually brought them back together, leading them to establish DAOU Family Estates in 2007. They were driven by their strong belief that the Adelaida District could produce exceptional Bordeaux-style wines, rivaling some of the world's finest.
To achieve this goal, the brothers carefully selected an incredible estate encompassing more than 200 acres of treasured land on the west side of Paso Robles. This area is characterized by its diverse soils, high elevation, and unique microclimate, making it ideal for growing premium grapes. They recognized the potential of the region's limestone-rich terroir, similar to that found in prestigious wine regions like Bordeaux.
The Daou brothers spared no expense in crafting both their vineyard and winery. They tirelessly studied the site's soil profiles, meticulously planted vineyards at varying elevations, and employed innovative viticultural techniques. Their dedication to quality and their uncompromising pursuit of perfection have consistently shone through in the exceptional wines they produce.
The first vintage of DAOU wine was released in 2009. These initial releases demonstrated the brothers' unwavering commitment to showcasing the inherent elegance, power, and complexity of the Adelaida District's terroir. The wines were an instant success, receiving high praise and critical acclaim from wine enthusiasts and experts worldwide.
Over the years, DAOU Family Estates has become synonymous with some of the finest Bordeaux-style wines in California. The winery's flagship wine, the Soul of a Lion, has consistently received stellar ratings and has been showcased as one of California's premier Cabernet Sauvignon offerings. Other notable wines, such as the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve Chardonnay, have also garnered widespread acclaim.
Aside from crafting exceptional wines, the Daou brothers have taken great pride in creating a winery that serves as a haven for wine lovers. The DAOU Mountain Estate offers breathtaking panoramic views, providing a serene and immersive experience for visitors. The state-of-the-art winery and tasting room are architectural masterpieces, blending perfectly with the surrounding natural beauty.
Today, DAOU Family Estates continues to flourish under the Daou brothers' leadership and vision. Their unwavering commitment to quality winemaking, meticulous attention to detail, and relentless pursuit of excellence have firmly established them among the most respected and sought-after wineries in California. As they carry on their family legacy, Georges and Daniel Daou continue to redefine what it means to create truly exceptional wines in the heart of Paso Robles.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
