Copain Wines
History
Copain Wines is a prestigious winery nestled in the picturesque Russian River Valley AVA of Sonoma County, California. Founded in 1999 by renowned winemaker Wells Guthrie, Copain Wines has quickly garnered acclaim for its exquisite cool-climate wines and commitment to producing premium quality, small-lot wines that reflect the unique terroir of Sonoma County.
The story of Copain Wines begins with Wells Guthrie, a passionate and talented winemaker who honed his skills at notable wineries around the world before settling in California. Inspired by his travels in France, particularly in the Rhône Valley, Guthrie sought to craft wines that showcased the elegance and complexity of cool-climate grapes.
In pursuit of this vision, Guthrie established Copain Wines with a focus on producing single-vineyard, single-varietal wines. The name "Copain" is derived from the French word for friend, reflecting Guthrie's belief in the importance of friendship and camaraderie both in winemaking and in the enjoyment of wine.
From its humble beginnings in a converted barn, Copain Wines quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional Pinot Noir and Syrah varietals. Guthrie's meticulous vineyard selection, sustainable farming practices, and minimal intervention winemaking techniques contributed to the creation of wines that perfectly express the character of the Russian River Valley.
Over the years, Copain Wines has expanded its portfolio to include other cool-climate varietals such as Chardonnay, Viognier, and Rosé. The winery predominantly sources its grapes from estate vineyards, but also collaborates with select growers who share Guthrie's commitment to sustainable farming and grape quality.
One of Copain Wines' defining features is its emphasis on vineyard transparency. Each wine produced by Copain is labeled with the vineyard name, allowing consumers to appreciate the distinct characteristics of different sites within the Russian River Valley. This approach not only highlights the diverse terroir of the region but also showcases Guthrie's dedication to crafting wines that speak of a specific time and place.
In recent years, Copain Wines has earned numerous accolades and critical acclaim from wine enthusiasts and industry experts alike. The winery's wines consistently receive high scores for their balance, finesse, and expression of the cool-climate Sonoma terroir.
Today, Copain Wines is a respected and sought-after producer in the California wine scene, with its wines featured on the menus of acclaimed restaurants and cherished by wine lovers around the world. Wells Guthrie and his talented team continue to push the boundaries of winemaking, producing wines that beautifully reflect their origin while impressing with their elegance, complexity, and age-worthiness.
In conclusion, the history of Copain Wines is a story of passion, friendship, and a commitment to showcasing the unique terroir of the Russian River Valley through exceptional cool-climate wines. From its establishment by Wells Guthrie to its current status as a revered producer, Copain Wines stands as a testament to the artistry and dedication that go into creating world-class California wines.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
