Clif Family Winery
History
Clif Family Winery is a renowned winery located in the heart of Napa Valley in California. It was established in 2004 by Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford, the same couple who founded the popular energy bar company, Clif Bar & Company. Drawing inspiration from their passion for adventure, sustainable farming, and wine, they embarked on a new venture to create exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of Napa Valley.
Before delving into the founding of Clif Family Winery, it is essential to understand the incredible journey that led Gary and Kit to this point. Both avid cyclists, they shared a love for the outdoors and a deep appreciation for organic and sustainably sourced food. In 1990, Gary found himself dissatisfied with the energy bars available for his long-distance bike rides, so he decided to create his own. This led to the birth of Clif Bar, which quickly gained popularity due to its delicious taste, nutritional value, and commitment to using organic ingredients.
As Clif Bar soared in success, the couple developed a keen interest in organic farming and vineyards. They fell in love with the Napa Valley region and recognized its incredible potential for grape cultivation. In 1997, they purchased a 150-acre property on Howell Mountain, which would become the foundation for their future winery.
Gary and Kit began their winemaking journey by planting vineyards on their property, primarily focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah varietals. They brought in renowned viticulturist, David Abreu, to consult on vineyard management, ensuring the highest quality grapes. The couple's commitment to sustainable farming practices was evident from the start, as they implemented organic and biodynamic farming techniques to minimize their environmental impact and promote soil health.
In 2004, Clif Family Winery officially opened its doors, offering their inaugural vintage to the public. The winery's portfolio featured a diverse range of varietals, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Rhône-style blends, and of course, their flagship red wine, the Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Each wine crafted by Clif Family Winery showcases the distinctiveness of Napa Valley's terroir, with an emphasis on balanced flavors, elegance, and expressiveness.
Today, Clif Family Winery has grown to become one of the must-visit destinations for wine enthusiasts in Napa Valley. The winery not only produces exceptional wines but also provides a unique experience for visitors. The Clif Family Tasting Room, located in the charming town of St. Helena, offers a warm and inviting space where guests can sample the winery's various offerings, paired with gourmet food inspired by the couple's global travel adventures.
Beyond wine, the Clif Family brand has expanded to include an array of artisan food products, reflecting the couple's commitment to carefully crafted, sustainable, and delicious offerings. From small-batch olive oils, preserves, and spices to their highly sought-after Clif Family Bruschetteria food truck, visitors can indulge in a true farm-to-fork experience.
Furthermore, Gary and Kit have stayed true to their passion for outdoor adventure and sustainability through their Clif Family Foundation. The foundation supports numerous initiatives focused on environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture, and promoting healthy lifestyles, ensuring that their commitment to the planet aligns with their business endeavors.
In conclusion, Clif Family Winery has not only carved a niche for itself in the competitive world of Napa Valley winemaking but has also become a symbol of true passion, conscious farming, and exploration. Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford's dedication to creating exceptional wines, promoting sustainable practices, and providing remarkable experiences have solidified Clif Family Winery's reputation as a premier destination for wine enthusiasts who seek an authentic taste of Napa Valley.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
