Cinnabar Winery
History
Cinnabar Winery, located in the picturesque Santa Cruz Mountains region, holds a rich history deeply intertwined with California's winemaking heritage. The tale begins in the early 1980s when the winery's founder, Tom Mudd, discovered his passion for winemaking while working in the vineyards and cellars of Sonoma County.
Mudd dreamt of creating exceptional wines that would embody the essence of California's diverse terroir. In 1983, he took a giant leap towards fulfilling this dream by purchasing a historic Victorian home in the quaint town of Saratoga, which would soon become the heart of Cinnabar Winery.
The Victorian house, dating back to the late 19th century, served as the winery's original tasting room and production facility. Mudd's vision was to create an immersive wine experience for visitors, enveloping them in the charm and beauty of the estate while showcasing the winery's extraordinary creations.
Within the estate's vineyards, Mudd planted a variety of grape varietals that thrive in the unique microclimates of the Santa Cruz Mountains. From the sun-kissed slopes to the cool foggy valleys, these diverse conditions allowed Cinnabar Winery to cultivate grapes with distinct character and complexity.
The first vintage of Cinnabar wines was released in 1984, marking the beginning of a storied winemaking journey. Mudd's meticulous craftsmanship and commitment to quality quickly gained recognition, and Cinnabar wines garnered numerous accolades, establishing the winery as a prominent player in the California wine scene.
In 1990, tragedy struck when a devastating fire engulfed the Victorian house. However, with unwavering determination, Mudd transformed this setback into an opportunity for growth and expansion. He initiated the construction of a new state-of-the-art winery facility on the same site, equipped with modern winemaking technology to further enhance the quality of Cinnabar wines.
Over the years, Cinnabar Winery continued to push boundaries and experiment with new winemaking techniques while staying true to its core values. Mudd's passion for blending different grape varietals resulted in unique and innovative wine blends that harmoniously combined the best qualities of each grape.
Mudd's dedication to sustainability was also evident throughout Cinnabar's practices. The winery adopted environmentally responsible measures, embracing organic and biodynamic principles in the vineyards and cellar. This commitment to the land and surrounding ecosystem allowed Cinnabar to produce wines that not only impressed in taste but also reflected a holistic connection to the environment.
As the winery expanded its distribution, Cinnabar wines captured the attention of wine enthusiasts worldwide. Its portfolio ranged from aromatic whites such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc to elegant reds like Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Bordeaux-style blends. Each varietal presented an authentic expression of the Santa Cruz Mountains' unique terroir and Mudd's visionary winemaking approach.
Today, Cinnabar Winery stands as a testament to Tom Mudd's enduring legacy. While Mudd sadly passed away in 2007, his vision and passion live on in every bottle of Cinnabar wine. The winery remains steadfast in its commitment to crafting extraordinary wines that embody the beauty and diversity of California's winemaking heritage.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
