Charles R Vineyards History

Charles R Vineyards, nestled in the picturesque Livermore Valley of California, boasts a rich and captivating history that spans several generations. Founded by Charles and Roberta Roper, the winery has become renowned for its dedication to producing exceptional wines while upholding the region's winemaking traditions.

The story of Charles R Vineyards begins in the late 1970s when Charles and Roberta, inspired by their shared passion for wine, embarked on a journey to establish their own winery. Livermore Valley, known for its unique microclimates and fertile soils, proved to be the perfect setting for their endeavor.

In 1983, after years of meticulous planning, Charles and Roberta purchased a sprawling property in the valley and planted their vineyard. The initial vineyard consisted of classic Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, which thrive in the Mediterranean-like climate of the region.

With an unwavering commitment to quality, the couple meticulously cared for their vines, employing sustainable farming practices long before it became a widespread trend. Their dedication and attention to detail quickly paid off, and by the mid-1980s, Charles R Vineyards was gaining recognition for its exceptional wines.

A significant turning point came in 1990 when the winery opened its tasting room, inviting wine enthusiasts to experience their handcrafted wines firsthand. Charles and Roberta's warm hospitality and genuine passion for winemaking created a welcoming atmosphere, turning visitors into lifelong patrons.

As the winery's reputation grew, so did the demand for their wines. Charles R Vineyards expanded its vineyard acreage and diversified its varietal offerings. In addition to their renowned Bordeaux varietals, the winery began cultivating Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, and Zinfandel grapes, among others, allowing them to produce a broader range of exquisite wines.

Charles R Vineyards prides itself on preserving Livermore Valley's rich winemaking heritage. Their winemaking team, led by experienced vintners, combines modern techniques with traditional methods to create wines that reflect both the unique terroir of the region and the winery's commitment to excellence.

Today, Charles R Vineyards continues to flourish under the guidance of Charles and Roberta's son, Richard, who passionately carries on the family legacy. Richard, having grown up in the vineyards, possesses an innate understanding of the land and an unwavering commitment to elevating the winery's reputation.

In recent years, Charles R Vineyards has gained recognition not only for their exquisite wines but also for their commitment to sustainability. Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
