Chapin Family Vineyards History

Chapin Family Vineyards is a renowned winery located in the heart of the picturesque Napa Valley in California. Known for its commitment to producing exceptional wines, the winery has a rich history that dates back several generations.

The story of Chapin Family Vineyards begins in the late 19th century when John Chapin, an adventurous and ambitious young man, decided to leave his home in New England to seek his fortune in California. Inspired by the gold rush and the promise of new opportunities, John arrived in California full of dreams and aspirations. However, after a series of unsuccessful ventures, he decided to try his luck in the wine industry.

In the early 1900s, John Chapin acquired a plot of land in the foothills of the Napa Valley. Recognizing the region's potential for grape cultivation, he planted his first vineyards and began producing small batches of wine. Despite the challenges faced by many winemakers during Prohibition, John managed to keep his vineyard operational by selling grapes to other wineries and making sacramental wine allowed for religious purposes.

When Prohibition was repealed in 1933, John's son, Robert Chapin, took over the vineyard and expanded its operations. Under Robert's guidance, the winery flourished, and its wines gained recognition for their exceptional quality and craftsmanship. Robert's commitment to sustainable farming practices and his passion for winemaking set the foundation for future generations of the Chapin family.

In the 1960s, Robert's son, William Chapin, joined the family business and brought a new era of innovation to the winery. William's background in chemistry and enology allowed him to experiment with different grape varieties and winemaking techniques. His expertise and dedication to excellence led to numerous accolades and awards for Chapin Family wines. The winery's reputation began to soar, attracting visitors from around the world.

With the turn of the millennium, William's daughter, Sarah Chapin, assumed the role of head winemaker. Trained in viticulture and oenology at renowned wine schools in France, Sarah carried on the family legacy by producing wines that showcased the unique character of the Napa Valley terroir. Her deep respect for the land and her commitment to sustainable farming practices ensured that each bottle of Chapin Family wine reflected the region's natural beauty.

Today, Chapin Family Vineyards remains a family-owned and operated winery, with Sarah Chapin at the helm. In addition to the Napa Valley estate, the winery has expanded its vineyard holdings to other prestigious regions in California, including Sonoma County and Santa Barbara County. This diversification allows the winery to produce a wide range of varietals, each with its own distinctive flavor profile.

Chapin Family Vineyards continues to be recognized as a pioneer in the Californian wine industry. Their commitment to quality and passion for winemaking has garnered them a loyal following of wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. Whether enjoying a bottle in their historic tasting room or savoring a glass at a fine dining establishment, Chapin Family wines bring forth the legacy of generations of hard work and devotion to the art of winemaking.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
