Captain Vineyards History

Captain Vineyards is a captivating winery nestled in the picturesque Livermore Valley, California. Its rich history dates back to the late 19th century when the land was first cultivated by Captain Thomas Wente. Born in Germany in 1844, Captain Thomas Wente embarked on a remarkable journey that would eventually lead him to the Livermore Valley and establish his legacy in winemaking.

In 1863, Captain Wente enlisted in the Union Army during the American Civil War and fought valiantly until his honorable discharge in 1865. Seeking new opportunities, he sailed to the United States and settled in California, where the allure of the burgeoning wine industry captivated him. Inspired by his European heritage and the passion for winemaking that ran in his blood, Captain Wente quickly recognized the potential of the Livermore Valley to produce exceptional wines.

In 1878, Captain Wente purchased a breathtaking 47-acre property in the Livermore Valley, which would become the foundation of his vineyard. He meticulously selected this land, known for its ideal climate, fertile soils, and excellent drainage, to cultivate grapes of exceptional quality. With perseverance and determination, Captain Wente began planting classic European grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel, among others, laying the groundwork for what would become an iconic winery.

Over the years, Captain Wente's vineyard flourished, earning a reputation for its commitment to quality, meticulous vineyard management, and skilful winemaking practices. The winery gained recognition as one of the region's premier producers, capturing the hearts of wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.

In the early 20th century, Captain Wente passed the winemaking torch to his sons, Ernest and Herman, who continued to build upon their father's legacy. The Wente family's dedication to excellence and innovation led them to introduce sustainable farming practices, pioneering techniques that would later shape the California wine industry. Their efforts propelled Captain Vineyards to new heights, solidifying its position as a trailblazer in sustainable viticulture and crafting outstanding wines.

Throughout the following decades, the third and fourth generations of the Wente family proudly carried the Captain Vineyards' legacy forward. They embraced modern technology, implemented state-of-the-art winemaking techniques, and explored new grape varieties while maintaining a deep respect for the winery's rich history. Captain Vineyards became synonymous with exceptional wines that exemplified the Livermore Valley's unique terroir.

Today, Captain Vineyards remains family-owned and operated, with the fifth generation passionately continuing the tradition of crafting extraordinary wines. The winery's commitment to sustainable practices, including organic farming, water conservation, and renewable energy, has garnered worldwide recognition and accolades.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
