Cambria Winery & Vineyard
History
Cambria Winery & Vineyard is a renowned winery located in the heart of Santa Maria Valley in California. Founded in 1987 by Barbara Banke and Jess Jackson, this winery has a fascinating history deeply rooted in the wine industry.
The story of Cambria Winery begins with Barbara Banke, a woman with a passion for wine and a deep appreciation for the land. In 1985, she purchased the historic Tepusquet Vineyard, which was one of the original vineyards planted in Santa Maria Valley back in the 1970s. This vineyard had a unique microclimate with well-drained soils, creating an ideal terroir for cultivating high-quality grapes.
Barbara's husband, Jess Jackson, was already a prominent figure in the wine industry at the time. As the founder of Kendall-Jackson Winery, he had a wealth of experience and knowledge about winemaking. Together, they saw great potential in the Tepusquet Vineyard and decided to start their own winery under the name Cambria Estate.
The name "Cambria" has great significance to the founders. It derives from the Latin name for Wales, which is the birthplace of the Jackson family. This name symbolizes their Welsh heritage and pays homage to the old-world traditions they aimed to incorporate into their winemaking.
In the early years, Cambria Winery focused on producing small-batch, vineyard-designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. The emphasis on these two varietals was driven by the unique climate and soil conditions found in Santa Maria Valley. The cooling maritime influence from the Pacific Ocean, coupled with the diverse range of soil types, creates the perfect environment for growing exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes.
To ensure the highest quality wines, the winery practices sustainable farming methods. They diligently manage their vineyards with minimal intervention, allowing the grapes to express the unique characteristics of the land. This commitment to preserving the environment and producing exceptional wines has earned Cambria Winery several certifications, including the SIP Certified Sustainable designation.
Over the years, Cambria Winery has become a benchmark for cool-climate, vineyard-designated wines in California. Their wines consistently receive critical acclaim and have gathered a loyal following worldwide. The Jackson family's dedication to quality, sustainability, and innovation has firmly established Cambria Winery as a leader in the wine industry.
Beyond winemaking, Cambria Winery has also been actively involved in supporting the local community and environmental causes. They strive to be good stewards of the land, implementing sustainable agriculture practices and participating in various community initiatives.
Today, Cambria Winery & Vineyard continues to produce exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, showcasing the unique terroir of Santa Maria Valley. Their commitment to quality, sustainability, and passion for winemaking ensures that Cambria remains a flagship winery in California, providing wine enthusiasts with an unparalleled tasting experience.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
