Brick Barn Wine Estate History

Brick Barn Wine Estate is a California winery located in the Santa Ynez Valley, specifically in the town of Buellton. This winery has an intriguing history that dates back to the early 20th century, making it a significant part of the region's viticultural heritage.

The story of Brick Barn Wine Estate begins in 1922 when a German immigrant named Gerd Jordano purchased the property. Initially, the land was utilized for various agricultural purposes, mainly focusing on dairy farming and raising horses. However, Jordano had a special passion for winemaking and decided to plant grapevines on the estate.

At that time, the Santa Ynez Valley was not as well-known for wine production as it is today. Nevertheless, Jordano recognized the region's potential for viticulture due to its ideal climate, diverse soils, and proximity to the Pacific Ocean. With determination and hard work, Jordano cultivated his vineyard and started producing wines, marking the beginning of the winemaking legacy at Brick Barn.

In the following decades, the estate changed hands a few times. In the 1940s, the property was acquired by George and Bettina Thieriot, who further expanded the vineyard and developed a reputation for producing high-quality grapes. They supplied their grapes to renowned wineries in the region, contributing to the overall growth of the Santa Ynez Valley's wine industry.

In 2010, the current owners, Norm and Steve Doizé, purchased the property and revived the winemaking tradition at Brick Barn Wine Estate. They recognized the historical significance of the estate and decided to honor its past by restoring the original barn, which was constructed using bricks made on-site in the early 1920s. The restored barn now serves as the winery's tasting room, providing visitors with a unique and charming ambiance.

Under the stewardship of the Doizé family, Brick Barn Wine Estate has undergone significant improvements. They implemented sustainable farming practices, such as organic and biodynamic viticulture, to ensure optimal grape quality while protecting the environment. With the help of talented winemaker Rob DaFoe, they started producing their own wines, reflecting the distinct character of the estate vineyards.

Today, Brick Barn Wine Estate is celebrated for its handcrafted wines, showcasing the unique terroir of the Santa Ynez Valley. The estate boasts approximately 35 acres of vineyards, planted with grape varietals such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Grenache, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc. The wines are carefully crafted in small batches, allowing the nuances of each grape varietal and vineyard block to shine through.

Beyond its winemaking pursuits, Brick Barn Wine Estate is also committed to providing a memorable experience for visitors. The tasting room offers panoramic views of the estate vineyards and the surrounding countryside, creating an idyllic setting for wine tasting and relaxation. Additionally, the winery hosts various events and private gatherings, further connecting wine enthusiasts with the winery's rich history and exceptional wines.

In essence, Brick Barn Wine Estate represents the timeless spirit of California winemaking. With its deep historical roots, commitment to sustainability, and dedication to producing exceptional wines, this winery continues to contribute to the vibrant and diverse wine culture of the Santa Ynez Valley.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
