Black Ridge Vineyards History

Black Ridge Vineyards is a renowned winery nestled in the scenic Santa Cruz Mountains of California. Its rich history dates back to the early 1970s, when it was initially established as a small family-owned vineyard. The winery's story begins with the visionary founders, John and Ann Patti, who recognized the unique potential of the Santa Cruz Mountains to produce high-quality wines.

In 1973, John and Ann purchased an idyllic 14-acre property on Black Road, which would become the foundation of Black Ridge Vineyards. Despite the challenges of starting from scratch, they were driven by an unwavering passion for winemaking and a belief that the Santa Cruz Mountains had immense untapped potential.

The early years were not without their struggles, as the Pattis faced a steep learning curve mastering the art of viticulture. However, through dedication and perseverance, they managed to plant their first grapevines in 1975, focusing on classic Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

Over the years, Black Ridge Vineyards gained a reputation for producing exceptional wines that showcased the unique terroir of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The region's cool climate, diverse soils, and distinct microclimate contributed to the development of vibrant, elegant, and age-worthy wines.

As the winery flourished, the Pattis expanded their vineyard holdings, acquiring additional parcels of land in neighboring areas. With each new acquisition, they carefully selected grape varieties that would thrive in the specific microclimates and soil compositions of each site. This strategic vineyard development allowed Black Ridge Vineyards to diversify its wine portfolio and showcase the incredible range of flavors and expressions that the Santa Cruz Mountains had to offer.

In the late 1990s, John and Ann Patti decided to retire from active winemaking, passing the torch to their daughter, Carrie Patti. Under Carrie's leadership, the winery experienced a remarkable transformation. She embraced sustainable and organic farming practices and continued to refine the winemaking techniques to produce wines that reflected both tradition and innovation.

Today, Black Ridge Vineyards stands as a testament to the family's unwavering commitment to excellence. The winery's portfolio has expanded to include a wide range of varietals, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Zinfandel, among others. Each wine is a reflection of the unique vineyard sites, meticulous attention to detail, and the generations of knowledge that have been passed down.

Black Ridge Vineyards remains deeply rooted in the Santa Cruz Mountains, representing both a legacy and a forward-thinking approach to winemaking. Its wines continue to win accolades and capture the hearts of wine enthusiasts worldwide, attracting visitors who seek to experience the profound beauty and distinct flavors of this remarkable region.

As Black Ridge Vineyards forges ahead, it remains dedicated to preserving the natural environment, expressing the true complexity of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and offering a genuinely exceptional wine tasting experience. With each sip, visitors can taste the passion, history, and artistry that have made Black Ridge Vineyards a beloved icon in the California wine industry.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
