Berghold Vineyards & Winery
History
Berghold Vineyards & Winery, located in the picturesque region of Lodi, California, has a rich and fascinating history that dates back several decades. The story of this extraordinary winery begins with the Berghold family, whose passion and commitment to winemaking have established them as one of the premier wine producers in the area.
The roots of the Berghold family's involvement in wine can be traced back to the early 1900s when John Berghold's great-grandfather, Joseph Spenker, emigrated from Germany to the United States. Spenker settled in the Lodi region and acquired a small farm that included a vineyard. This marked the beginning of the family's connection to the land and the world of viticulture.
Over the years, the Spenker family, including John Berghold's grandfather and father, cultivated the vineyard and expanded the grape-growing operations. However, it wasn't until the early 1980s when John Berghold, a successful San Francisco attorney, and his wife, Sue, chose to follow their passion for winemaking and continue the family legacy.
In 1984, the Bergholds purchased an old cherry orchard in Lodi with the intention of transforming it into a world-class vineyard and winery. They began by planting premium grape varietals, primarily focusing on Zinfandel, which thrives in Lodi's Mediterranean climate and fertile soil. The family believed in sustainable farming practices, prioritizing the health of the vineyards and the environment.
With meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of winemaking, Berghold Vineyards was established as a boutique winery, crafting small-lot, handcrafted wines of exceptional quality. The Berghold family quickly gained recognition for their dedication to excellence and their ability to produce exceptional wines that showcased the unique characteristics of the Lodi appellation.
The winery's success enabled them to expand their vineyard holdings, acquiring additional land and planting new vineyards. Today, Berghold Vineyards encompasses over 85 acres of vineyards, carefully chosen for their optimal terroir and diversity of grape varietals. Zinfandel still remains the flagship varietal, but the winery also cultivates other popular grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Viognier.
In addition to their commitment to viticulture, the Bergholds have created a stunning estate that welcomes visitors to experience the beauty of their vineyards. The winery's estate features a Tuscan-inspired tasting room, surrounded by lush gardens, a pond, and an expansive picnic area. The picturesque landscape offers guests a serene setting where they can sample the award-winning wines and learn more about the winemaking process.
Berghold Vineyards has not only garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards for its wines but has also embraced its role as an ambassador for the Lodi wine region. John and Sue Berghold have been active participants in promoting Lodi, showcasing the exceptional quality of the wines produced in this region.
The Berghold Family's dedication to winemaking excellence, sustainable farming practices, and their unwavering commitment to the Lodi region has firmly positioned Berghold Vineyards & Winery as one of California's most respected wineries. Their wines continue to capture the essence of the land, reflecting the heritage and passion that have been passed down through generations.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
