Benessere Vineyards
History
Benessere Vineyards is a renowned winery situated in the beautiful Napa Valley of California. Founded in 1994, the winery has a rich history that is closely tied to the region's winemaking roots.
The story of Benessere begins with the vision and passion of the owner, John Benish Sr. A third-generation Italian-American, Benish drew inspiration from his family's winemaking heritage and the Italian viticultural tradition. His dream was to establish a winery that would not only produce exceptional wines but also celebrate Italian varietals and winemaking techniques.
In pursuit of his dream, Benish acquired a 38-acre property in the northern part of Saint Helena, an area renowned for its fertile soils and ideal climate for grape cultivation. The vineyard was planted with classical Italian grape varieties, including Sangiovese, Moscato di Canelli, and Tocai Friulano, among others. These varieties were chosen not only for their suitability to the climate but also for their ability to reflect the essence of Italy's diverse wine regions.
From the very beginning, Benish aimed to create wines that would embody the classic Italian winemaking philosophy of balance, elegance, and finesse. To achieve this, he enlisted the expertise of renowned winemaker David Phinney, who shared his vision and passion for Italian varietals. Together, they embarked on a journey to craft wines that would capture the true spirit of the grapes and the Napa Valley terroir.
Benessere Vineyards quickly gained acclaim for its exceptional wines, showcasing the unique character and complexity of Italian varietals grown in the Napa Valley. Their Sangiovese, in particular, became highly regarded and earned numerous awards and accolades, solidifying Benessere's reputation as a producer of outstanding Italian-style wines.
Over the years, Benessere Vineyards expanded its vineyard holdings and planted additional varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel, allowing for a broader range of wines to be offered. Each vineyard site was carefully selected to ensure the optimal conditions for each grape variety, and sustainable farming practices were implemented to preserve the health and diversity of the land.
Today, Benessere Vineyards continues to flourish as a family-owned and operated winery, with John Benish Sr.'s son, Ben, assuming a vital role in the winemaking process. The winery remains committed to producing exceptional wines that honor the Italian winemaking heritage, while also embracing the distinct qualities of the Napa Valley.
Visiting Benessere Vineyards offers an opportunity to experience the true essence of Italian-style winemaking in the heart of the Napa Valley. Guests can indulge in tastings of the winery's acclaimed wines, explore the picturesque vineyards, and revel in the warm hospitality provided by the Benessere family.
Benessere Vineyards stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of winemaking, blending tradition with innovation, and paying homage to the storied history of Italian viticulture while embracing the unique terroir of the Napa Valley.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
