What Some Possible Concerns About Arkenstone Vineyards
?
While Arkenstone Vineyards is generally well-regarded, there have been a few factors that some individuals may not have liked about the winery. These include:
1. Limited availability: Arkenstone Vineyards produces a relatively small quantity of wine each year, making it somewhat exclusive and difficult to access for some individuals. This limited availability can make it challenging for wine enthusiasts to get their hands on their desired bottles.
2. Higher price point: The wines produced by Arkenstone Vineyards are known for their exceptional quality, but this excellence comes at a premium price. Some people may find the cost of the wines to be higher compared to other wineries in the region.
3. Restricted tasting experiences: Arkenstone Vineyards offers tastings by appointment only, which can limit spontaneity for visitors. Additionally, the winery's tastings are known for being more formal and structured, catering to a more serious wine-drinking audience. This approach may not appeal to individuals seeking a relaxed or informal atmosphere.
4. Limited wine variety: Arkenstone Vineyards specializes in producing high-quality Napa Valley estate-grown wines, primarily focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. While loved by fans of these varietals, those who prefer a wider selection of wine styles may find the winery's range somewhat limited.
5. Distance from major towns/cities: Arkenstone Vineyards is nestled in the remote Howell Mountain region of Napa Valley, which can be quite a distance from major towns or cities. This remoteness may deter some visitors who prefer wineries in more accessible and convenient locations.
It's important to note that these points are subjective, and what may be a drawback for some individuals might be seen as positive aspects by others.

History
Arkenstone Vineyards is a renowned winery located in the picturesque Howell Mountain AVA (American Viticultural Area) in Napa Valley, California. Founded by proprietors Ron and Susan Krausz, Arkenstone is dedicated to producing exceptional wines that showcase the unique characteristics of the Howell Mountain terroir. The winery's commitment to quality, innovation, and respect for the land has earned it a prominent place among the esteemed wineries of Napa Valley.
The story of Arkenstone Vineyards began in the late 1980s when Ron Krausz, an avid wine enthusiast and collector, discovered the untapped potential of Howell Mountain. Known for its high elevation, rugged terrain, and distinctive volcanic soils, Howell Mountain offered a unique microclimate that was largely unexplored in terms of wine production. Ron recognized the opportunity to produce exceptional wines that could rival the very best in the world.
In 1988, Ron purchased a 160-acre property atop Howell Mountain, formerly known as Jake's Vineyard, with the vision of creating a world-class winery. The name "Arkenstone" comes from J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, "The Hobbit," where it referred to a gemstone of great beauty and value. This name symbolized Ron's ambition to craft wines of exceptional quality that would captivate wine enthusiasts.
During the early years, Arkenstone Vineyards faced numerous challenges in transforming the rugged mountainous terrain into a remarkable vineyard. Ron and Susan worked tirelessly to implement sustainable farming practices, employing organic and biodynamic techniques to nurture the vines and enhance the natural environment. It was a labor of love that required patience, dedication, and a deep understanding of the unique Howell Mountain terroir.
In 1998, Arkenstone Vineyards released its inaugural vintage, showcasing the exquisite varietals that thrived in the mountainous terroir. The winery's focus lies primarily on Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, which demonstrate exceptional expression and depth when cultivated in Howell Mountain's distinctive soil and climatic conditions.
Arkenstone's winemaking philosophy is centered around minimal intervention, allowing the characteristics of the grapes and the terroir to shine. The winery employs traditional winemaking techniques, including hand sorting, gentle extraction, and aging in the finest French oak barrels. The resulting wines exhibit a sense of place, reflecting the unique flavor profile of Howell Mountain.
Over the years, Arkenstone Vineyards has gained accolades and critical acclaim for its exceptional wines. The combination of high elevation, volcanic soils, and meticulous winemaking practices has consistently resulted in wines of extraordinary complexity, elegance, and age-worthiness.
Today, Arkenstone Vineyards stands as a testament to the Krausz family's unwavering commitment to producing exceptional wines. Ron and Susan, along with their daughter and winemaker, winery manager, and viticulturalist, have tirelessly pursued their dream of crafting world-class wines that celebrate Howell Mountain's unique terroir.
Arkenstone Vineyards continues to evolve and innovate under the family's guidance, consistently striving for continuous improvement in both viticulture and winemaking. With a focus on sustainability, education, and community, Arkenstone Vineyards represents the epitome of excellence and is a beacon of the formidable winemaking heritage of Napa Valley's Howell Mountain.
Introduction
Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!
I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....
After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.
Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.
Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.
As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.
Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
