Amphora Winery History

Amphora Winery, nestled in the heart of California's wine country, has a rich and captivating history that spans over several decades. The story of this renowned winery begins with its founder, Peter J. Staffler, and his relentless pursuit of winemaking excellence.

Peter Staffler's journey into winemaking began in the late 1960s when he developed a passion for the art and science of crafting fine wines. Inspired by the beauty of Napa Valley, Staffler decided to establish his own winery, focusing on traditional winemaking techniques combined with his vision for producing wines that truly expressed the character of the region.

In 1976, Amphora Winery came into existence, making it one of the early pioneers in the modern California wine industry. Staffler's approach to winemaking was unique; he believed in using low-intervention methods, paying close attention to each step of the process to preserve the authenticity and natural characteristics of the grapes. His commitment to quality quickly gained recognition, and Amphora wines began to earn accolades and a loyal following among wine enthusiasts.

The early years were marked by experimentation and innovation. Peter Staffler embraced techniques like barrel fermentation, extended maceration, and whole cluster pressing, pushing the boundaries of traditional winemaking practices. These approaches resulted in wines that were distinct, showcasing complexity, depth, and a true sense of place.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Amphora Winery grew in prominence and continued to garner critical acclaim. Staffler's dedication to crafting exceptional wines using minimal intervention led to numerous awards and accolades. The winery became renowned for its limited production artisanal wines, primarily sourced from small, carefully selected vineyards across California's diverse wine regions.

In 2001, Peter Staffler took a bold step and handed over the reins of Amphora Winery to the next generation of winemakers, his sons Gideon and Daniel Staffler. Building upon their father's legacy, Gideon and Daniel inherited the passion for handcrafting wines that reflect the terroir and character of the grapes.

Under their stewardship, Amphora Winery has evolved while staying true to its foundation of artisanal winemaking. The Staffler brothers have continued to refine and perfect their techniques, beautifully marrying traditional methods with modern advancements. They implemented sustainable farming practices, such as organic and biodynamic viticulture, to ensure the continued health of the vineyards and the environment.

Amphora Winery's portfolio of wines has expanded over time, offering a diverse range of varietals that exemplify their commitment to quality and authenticity. From rich and velvety Cabernet Sauvignon to elegant Chardonnay, each wine embodies the essence of the vineyard and the artistry of the winemaking process.

Today, Amphora Winery stands as a testament to the visionary leadership of Peter Staffler and the ongoing commitment of his sons. Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
