Alegria Vineyards History

Alegria Vineyards, situated in the heart of the wine country in Sonoma County, California, boasts a rich and fascinating history that spans over a century. The story of this legendary winery begins in the late 1800s and intertwines with the struggles and triumphs of Italian immigrants and the evolution of winemaking in California.

The roots of Alegria Vineyards can be traced back to 1887 when the Del Fava family, immigrants from Lombardy, Italy, first arrived in the region. Recognizing the potential of the area's Mediterranean-like climate for grape cultivation, the Del Fava family settled on a picturesque hillside property, drawn to the fertile soils and stunning views of the Russian River Valley.

Giuseppe Del Fava, patriarch of the family, laid the foundation for the winery by carefully selecting and planting a variety of grapevines on the property. His dedication and hard work paid off, as the vines flourished and the quality of the wine produced from Alegria Vineyards gained attention and acclaim within the local community.

Through the years, Alegria Vineyards faced many challenges, including Prohibition, which posed a significant threat to the winery's survival. While many wineries across the nation were forced to close, Alegria Vineyards managed to adapt by selling sacramental wine to local Catholic churches, enabling them to continue operating throughout this difficult period.

In the decades that followed, the vineyard changed hands several times, each transition adding a unique chapter to Alegria's history. Notably, in the 1970s, the vineyard began to specialize in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, aligning itself with the emerging trend towards premium wines in Sonoma County.

In 1998, the current owners, Mark and Gretchen Mendenhall, came across Alegria Vineyards and recognized its incredible potential. Inspired by the property's rich heritage, they embarked on an ambitious mission to restore the vineyard to its former glory while also infusing it with their own vision and passion.

Under the Mendenhalls' stewardship, Alegria Vineyards embraced sustainable farming practices and implemented modern winemaking techniques to elevate the quality of their wines further. They meticulously nurtured the estate's old vines, carefully selected grape varieties, and worked tirelessly to highlight the unique characteristics of each vineyard block.

Today, Alegria Vineyards is renowned for producing exceptional, small-lot wines that embody the essence of the Russian River Valley. Their portfolio includes a diverse range of varietals, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zinfandel, all of which showcase the estate's distinct terroir.

Visitors to Alegria Vineyards are greeted with breathtaking views of rolling hills and vineyards, as well as a warm and inviting tasting room where they can experience the winery's award-winning wines. The Mendenhalls' commitment to preserving the property's historic charm extends beyond winemaking, as they have also renovated the original farmhouse, creating a beautiful space for events and private gatherings.

Alegria Vineyards stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Del Fava family, as well as the generations of winemakers who followed in their footsteps. With its rich history, breathtaking surroundings, and exceptional wines, Alegria Vineyards continues to captivate wine enthusiasts and honor its legacy as one of California's esteemed wineries.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
