The Negrette Grape

A red grape variety primarily found in the Fronton region near Toulouse, France. It produces deeply colored wines with a bouquet of violets, red fruits, and a hint of pepper. Negrette wines are known for their soft texture, aromatic complexity, and fruity profile.

Negrette Grape History

Negrette is a red wine grape variety with a long and storied history that dates back several centuries. Believed to have originated in the southern French region of Occitanie, specifically in the Fronton appellation near Toulouse, Negrette is an ancient grape variety that has been cultivated in the area for generations.

One of the most distinctive traits of the Negrette grape is its deep ruby red color, which is often described as intense and vibrant. The grape clusters themselves are small to medium in size, with tightly packed berries that are known for their high sugar content and prominent acidity. These qualities make Negrette a versatile grape that is well-suited for producing a wide range of wines, from light and fruity rosés to rich and complex reds.

In terms of flavor profile, Negrette wines are typically characterized by their notes of dark fruits such as blackberry, blueberry, and plum, as well as hints of spice, earth, and floral aromas. The wines are known for their smooth texture, medium to full body, and well-balanced acidity, making them a popular choice among wine enthusiasts looking for something unique and elegant.

Negrette is primarily grown in the Fronton region of France, where it is the dominant grape variety used in the production of wines under the Fronton AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée). Fronton is located in the southwestern part of France, near the city of Toulouse, and is known for its distinct terroir characterized by gravelly soils and a warm, sunny climate that is ideal for grape growing.

In addition to being used in single varietal wines, Negrette is also often blended with other grape varieties such as Syrah, Gamay, and Cabernet Sauvignon to add complexity and depth to the final wine. These blends are highly regarded for their rich flavors and unique character, showcasing the best qualities of each grape variety.

Looking towards the future, Negrette is poised to continue gaining recognition and popularity among wine lovers around the world. As consumers become more adventurous in their wine choices and seek out lesser-known grape varieties, Negrette offers a unique and exciting option that brings a taste of the French countryside to the glass.

With its rich history, distinctive flavors, and versatility in winemaking, Negrette is a grape variety that is sure to captivate wine enthusiasts for years to come. Whether enjoyed on its own or as part of a blend, Negrette wines offer a delightful sensory experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Franklin Laurel - Welcome!

I started drinking wine in 1992 when I was in my early twenties and recently married. Like many other young Southern Californians, it started out with White Zinfandel. As we were a couple of young DINKs just beginning life together, and on a budget, our go-to-wine was Sutter Home White Zinfandel, which tasted a lot like wine coolers and probably cost at the time $2.49. If we really were going to splurge, we would step it up and buy Beringer White Zinfandel for $2.99. Those were the days....

After a little time, we decided to get fancy. We stepped up our game and bought some wonderful 2-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. The Charles Shaw (Trader Joe's Exclusive Label) wine, also known as 2-Buck-Chuck extended our pallet into Reds for only $1.99 a bottle. Over the years we continued to grow in our understanding of wine (finally ran into some good wine) and we slowly kept buying better and better bottles.

Our first wine club purchase was from Kenwood's Vineyards, in Kenwood, California located in Sonoma Valley, right next to the famous Napa Valley. I began to learn about tobacco leather, and earthiness, and lots of other strange terminology when tasting their signature Zinfandels (of the red variety). So that is how it all began.

Fast forward a couple decades, and we have been members of five different wine clubs, and now have a passion for California's red wines. My favorite by far is Cabernet Sauvignon, while my wife fancies a good Syrah, Malbec, or Merlot - but she also loves the smell of a wine barrel room, which is all about the notes of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As I come across great wine resources and useful information that I find in planning my own wine trips, I will share here for anyone that might stumble across my humble website.

Cheers! - Franklin Laurel
